Cornwall & its Heritage

5 day holiday - Monday 15th April 2024 - SOLD OUT

Highlights...

The Eden Project
Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Gardens

Pencarrow House and the Bodmin Railway

Cornwall is a peninsula bordered to the North and West by the Celtic Sea, with a very dramatic rugged shoreline and rolling surf, and to the South, the English Channel, a much calmer coastline with tranquil sandy coves, known as the Cornish Riviera. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty, with breath-taking views, fabulous beaches, stunning scenery, spectacular surf, picturesque harbours, quaint fishing villages and, of course, Cornish Pasties and Cream Teas. The county of Cornwall is situated to the very South West of the country and due to the influence of the Gulf stream it has a very mild and sunny climate. Being the only area of sub-tropical countryside in the United Kingdom, incredible exotic plants grow and thrive. Cornwall, isolated from the mainland by the River Tamar, is recognised as one of the Celtic nations. It is the homeland of the Cornish people and retains its own distinct cultural identity. Traditional industries included tin and copper mining, with tourism, fishing and agriculture now being the main sectors of the economy.

Whilst in Cornwall we will be travelling to the Eden Project, Pencarrow House and Bodmin Railway, with a picturesque coach tour on our day to St Ives, where we will be visiting the Tate St Ives Gallery and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Gardens.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Monday 15th April

Collected from your home by door to door car, you will be taken to the Crowne Plaza, Gerrards Cross, to be greeted by your tour manager. Tea or coffee and pastries will be served before we board the coach for our trip to Cornwall. En route, we will stop for lunch at the Fox and Goose Inn in Brent Knoll and will expect to reach our final destination, the Carlyon Bay Hotel, by late afternoon. After booking into the hotel, we will have time to settle in, explore our surroundings and the hotel’s wonderful facilities, and meet with friends old and new before enjoying our three-course dinner in the Bay View restaurant.

Day 2 – Tuesday 16th April

After breakfast we will board the coach for the short drive to the Eden Project. Dubbed the eighth Wonder of the World by some, Eden is a dramatic global garden housed in tropical biomes that nestle in a crater, left after many years of mining for china clay. We will be spending the day here, on a self-led tour of the Mediterranean and Rain Forest Biomes, where we will see a huge variety of amazing plants, and will meet up to enjoy lunch together at one of the many cafes and restaurants in the project.

Day 3 – Wenesday 17th April

Today we will take a scenic coach journey to St Ives, to visit the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden and the Tate St Ives Gallery. The Hepworth museum and garden, based in the house where Barbara Hepworth lived with her family from 1939 to the end of her life, gives us a remarkable insight into one of Britain’s most important 20th century artists.

Originally opened in 1993 by the then HRH Charles, Prince of Wales, Tate St Ives is built on the site of a former gasworks overlooking Porthmeor Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. We have a guided tour booked at each of these locations and lunch at the café at the Tate St Ives Gallery, situated at the top of the gallery with fantastic sea views. There is a lift to take us up to the café.

Day 4 – Thursday 18th April

This morning we will board the coach after breakfast, to travel to Pencarrow House which has been the family home of the Molesworth-St Aubyns for almost 500 years and has been used in the popular television series ‘Doc Martin’. We will have a guided tour of the house where we will see fine paintings, china, porcelain and glass, some of which comes from the Crystal Palace in London. There may even be a glimpse of some secret passages! Our lunch today will be in the Peacock Café in the grounds of Pencarrow House. Following time in the gardens of Pencarrow House, we will travel to the Bodmin Railway, where we will have a trip back in time on a steam train.

Day 5 – Friday 19th April

After breakfast we will check out of our rooms and board the coach for our journey home. We will stop for our farewell lunch at the Fox and Goose Inn and expect to arrive at the Crowne Plaza in Gerrards Cross by approximately 4.30pm. Tea or coffee and cakes will be served before the door to door cars arrive at 5.00pm.
